ABOUT THE POEM ON THIS PAGE

The Ancient Seal of True Meditation, is based on a poem written by Chinese Zen Master Hongzhi (1091-1157). The Japanese Zen Master Dogen (1200-1253) wrote his own interpretation of Hongzhi's, poem which is translated in a text called "Dogen's Manuals of Zen Meditation" by Carl Bielefeldt (1988). I am indebted to Carl Bielefeldt for his excellent translation of both poems. It was Dr. Bielefeldt's work which provided the inspiration for writing my own clarification of both poems. In writing my own poem, I am not saying that Master Hongshi and Master Dogen did not hit the mark. Rather I am saying that the Ancient Seal of True Meditation can also be fully expressed, further studed, and daily practiced Just Like THIS.

ANCIENT SEAL OF TRUE MEDITATION

A fearless tiger settles with ease in the moonlit forest. An awakened dragon spreads its wings in the fertile valley. Just like this, all beings and things have a great functioning. Here or there, inert or active, great functioning is only One. The still functioning of core-Self is the essence of total reality. Silently illuminating linear time and our five pristine senses, Yet It is the timelessness of ungraspable enlightenment Itself.

Even as Its brilliance is before seeing, hearing, and touching, Its still discernment and lucid composure are intimately felt. Compassionately exposing the limitations of our thinking, It claries everyday life through Its boundless empathy. Although It is openly present in the midst of thinking, It investigates matters independent of reasoning. Revealing the surface and depth of total reality, Its intimacy penetrates both life and death.

As It wholly fathoms both life and death, Its still knowing is vast and without peer. Honoring the useful function of ego-self, It creates no enemy to be vanquished. Ever beyond thinking and knowing, It cannot be dened nor compared. Far beneath naming and figuring, Its discerning stillness apprehends without grasping or pushing away. Whether rippled or turbulent, the muddy stream remains lucidly clear and undefield. A whale swims with ease in a waterless ocean. Gliding across the vast Oneness of a blue sky, the hawk remains completely nested in its flight.
